The city of Eket and Onna came alive on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 as Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel flagged-off massive
construction of roads, urban renewal and beautification projects in both council areas.
Speaking at the ceremony, The
Commissioner for Works in the state,
Mr. Ephraim Akparawa Inyang said the move is in keeping with the fulfilment of his Excellency’s campaign promise to sustain
superior performance and provide critical infrastructure for the benefit of the people.
Mr Inyang said the project will span the remodelling of Urua Offiong Etuk roundabout in Eket Local Government Area and the construction and remodelling of several other selected roads in the city, including strategic roundabouts and junctions for the first and second phase.
Mr. Inyang solicited co-operation of the youths, stakeholders and people of Eket and not obstruct the remodelling project in Eket
which he disclosed will be handled by NigerPet Structures Limited.
The Commissioner assured that, at the completion of the project which will span 33 months, Eket will wear a new look with an
upswing in business activities, tourism and investment in the area, adding there will be
free flow of traffic and that the problem of flooding will be eradicated.
In his remarks, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, Mr Udom Emmanuel dedicated the flag-off to God and thanked
the people for entrusting him with their mandate.
Governor Emmanuel who declared that, the massive rehabilitation, construction of roads and beautification is a right step to restore Eket Local Government to its lost glory, which he noted was the pivot of our moral and religious awakening as the missionaries led by Rev. Samuel Bil first landed there.
The governor further stressed that, Eket was the hub of factories such as PZ and UAC among
many others but all have fizzled out due to decay in the city, harping that, his administration will ignite a restoration of
He charged the people to keep supporting government and to ensure they do not undermine the project adding that compensation will be paid for certified property affected in the development stride.
In their separate remarks, the Ahta of Eket and Clan head of Idua, HRM, Chief E.C.D. Abia
and the Chairman Transition Committee, Hon. Frank Archibong thanked the governor and assured him of the loyalty, support and
gratitude of Eket people for the project.
Hon. Archibong said Eket deserves to be accorded priority having been deprived for years and thanked the governor for being
the instrument to turn their fortune around.
From Eket, the Governor moved to Mkpok junction in Onna local Government Area where he flagged-off the 5km Mkpok – Okat
road to be constructed by Hensek
Integrated Services Limited.
Commissioner for Works, Mr Ephraim Akparawa Inyang, at the occasion observed that, the road is very important to the economic life of the area as it empties into
the Okat beach which noted has the best sharp sand around the state.
He reminded the people that Governor Emmanuel has hit
the ground running to fulfil his campaign pledges as the flag-off demonstrates.
Speakers at the occasion including the Deputy Chief Whip and member representing Onna State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Hon.
Nse Essien and the Clan Head of Nnung Ndem, HRH, Chief Akpan Eno commended the governor for his fidelity with his campaign promises.
Hon. Essien stressed that Governor
Emmanuel will be supported by the people to run the full tenure of 8 years and assured the people that, the state will be completely
revolutionized by the development the governor will wrought in the land.
Governor Emmanuel thanked the people for turning out in their numbers to, as he put it,
“welcome development”, and assured them that, though his main focus is industrialization, he will not lose sight of consolidating and delivering on good
infrastructure, urban renewal and
beautification to sustain the pride of the state as a tourist delight and destination of choice it has since become. Governor Emmanuel accordingly sued for support to enable the contractor deliver in a record time of ten months. While appreciating the
warm welcome of his entourage, he charged them to remain steadfast as his administration will not fail them.
The mammoth crowd which included women and youth groups, leaders, stakeholders and party faithfuls who all came to cheer the governor and to thank
him for the projects, were entertained by cultural displays and music performers
