The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has passed a resolution
calling on the state governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, to extend the
tenure of the present transition councils of the thirty one local
government for another six months.
This follows the adoption of the amended recommendations of
the House committee on
Local government and chieftaincy affairs.
the House also called on the state governor to cause the akwa
ibom state independent electoral commission, AKISIEC, to conduct
local government elections within the period of the extension.
Governor Udom Emmanuel was also empowered to replace any
chairman or member of the transition committees found wanting
in the discharge of their duties.
Most of the members of the assembly who spoke on the report
decried the continuous use of transition committees to run the
affairs at the third tier of government pointing out that it was not
in line with the provisions of the constitution.
Speaker of the Assembly, Mr Onofiok Luke urged the chairmen
and members of the local government transition committees to
place the interest of the people above every other considerations
